Understanding Assignment Shift Notes

The purpose of an Assignment Shift Note is to document or justify the patient or department assignments for the selected shift. Notes such as 8 students on unit or Disaster drill at 10 a.m., for example, assist users in understanding the conditions under which the assignments were made. You can create and view notes about the shift on the Patient Assign page or the Department Assign page.

If there is no shift note on file, the Shift Note icon displays a blue plus (+) sign. If there is a shift note on file, the Shift Note icon displays a star.

If there are multiple shift notes, notes are displayed in reverse chronological order, meaning the newest message is at the top and the oldest is at the bottom. Each note is marked with the user account name of the person who entered the note and the date and time the note was made. The assignment shift note is shared for profiles using Patient Assign and Department Assign. Notes entered for the profile in Patient Assign can be viewed in Department Assign, and vice versa.

You must remember that shift notes are tied to their specific shift category partitions and are not carried forward to future shift partitions. For example, a shift note written for the 7a-3p shift is not displayed in the Shift Note window during the 3p-11p shift.

Remember that assignment shift notes apply only to the shift. If you want to add a note to a specific patient, you should add a Patient Encounter Note.
